Watermelon Economics

Remember Thomas Piketty, the pro-class-warfare economist who is infamous for shoddy analysis and who also made a fool of himself by asserting back in 2023 that Javier Milei’s election in Argentina would lead to economic disaster?

Yes, that Thomas Piketty.

It turns out he’s also a “watermelon,” which is the derisive term for leftists who repackage their hate-and-envy agenda as being good for the environment (in other words, they’re “green on the outside but red on the inside“).

Piketty’s World Inequality Lab (most of which is directly or indirectly funded by taxpayers) has published Global Justice Report: A Plan for Equality & Prosperity Within Planetary Boundaries.

Here are some screenshots of the key proposals.

We’ll start with the tax agenda, which includes global income taxes and global wealth taxes. But not just global taxes. The income tax would have a top rate of 90 percent and the wealth tax would reach 20 percent.

Utter lunacy. Even Bernie Sanders is probably saying “whoa, we don’t want to destroy the world economy that fast!”

Why do Piketty and his colleagues want massive tax increases?

Because they want massive new spending.

Under their scheme, 10.3 percent of economic output would be diverted to a so-called Global Justice Fund.

What is 10.3 percent of world GDP, you ask?

About $12 trillion. Even AOC is probably saying “guys, go easy on the socialism!”

The Global Justice Fund is merely part of this agenda. Piketty and colleagues also want a “World Sovereign Fund” that would give politicians the ability to allocate $70 trillion-plus of capital.

In his jail cell, I imagine Maduro saying “wow, why didn’t I think of this!”

If you think all of these ideas are crazy (and they are), want until you see this final agenda item.

Piketty, et al, also want an international currency.

The Modern Monetary Theory crowd presumably is thinking “is it a good idea to destroy global finance that quickly?”

This is unquestionably the nuttiest set of ideas that I have ever read.

Makes the proposed wealth tax in California seem reasonable by comparison.

The one silver lining is that Piketty has demonstrated that nobody should ever pay attention to him and his cranky ideas.

P.S. Cranky ideas seem to be a specialty for radical environmentalists.
