It’s easy to identify President Trump’s worst issue. It’s trade, of course, where his protectionist views and policies are economically illiterate.

It’s also easy to identify his best issue. Trump has been very good about lowering the burden of red tape in the United States.

Today we’re going to look at an example of Trump’s deregulatory success.

But it’s not going to be an example with big dollar savings for the economy. Instead, it belongs in better-quality-of-life category.

Drivers have long wanted to put a permanent stopper on stop-start. Designed to lower auto emissions by temporarily shutting off the engine while the brake is engaged, it also makes driving feel unnatural, jerky and unenjoyable. …federal incentives during the Obama administration kicked U.S. adoption into high gear. …By 2024, roughly 58% of new gasoline non-hybrid cars had the systems installed. …This year, stop-start resisters finally found their champion: President Trump. …EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the agency was eliminating the federal credits that contributed to stop-start’s widespread adoption. The official White House account on X celebrated with a meme video of a Prius-style car standing still at a stop light, its engine shut off and two sweaty occupants baking inside.

Since both of my cars are more than 20 years old, I don’t have to deal with the hassle of “auto stop” on a regular basis, but it has been in some of the cars I’ve rented.

At best, it’s a pain in the neck. But it also has some real-world consequences since you have much less confidence about making a quick left turn when there’s just a small opening in oncoming traffic in the other lane.

I’ve written several times about Trump’s other initiatives to improve the quality of life. For all intents and purposes, the President is battling against environmental zealots and meddling politicians.

• They have given us substandard toilets
• They have saddled us with inadequate washing machines
• They have forced us to use dribbling showers
• They have endangered us with dysfunctional gas cans
• They have tormented us with crummy dishwashers
• They have moved to curtail and ban gas stoves
• They have compelled us to use inferior light bulbs

I’m especially interested in Trump’s continuing efforts to restore quality shower heads. I might even forgive some of his bad policies if future shower heads delivered strong streams instead of weak mist.
