Part II: What Motivates the Left, Envy or Greed?

Back in 2014, I shared some very depressing polling data showing that a strong majority of Labour voters in the United Kingdom wanted higher tax rates even if the economic damage was so large that the government did not collect any additional tax revenue.

That’s a crazy position to hold. Similar to what a former American president once said.

Today’s column is about another group of people with a similar class-warfare attitude.

Here’s a poll of Danish parliamentarians. As you can see, 100 percent of the lawmakers from the four left-wing political parties would block poor people from enjoying more income in order to prevent rich people from getting even more income.

This is very depressing.

It shows that many folks on the left hate the rich more than they love the poor (as Margaret Thatcher sagely observed nearly 40 years ago).

Envy and spite are a poor basis for economic policy if the goal is to help the less fortunate.

All of which confirms the wisdom of my Eighth Theorem of Government.
