If I’m being serious, deregulation is actually Trump’s most impressive accomplishment.
Today’s column, however, will be dripping with sarcasm. That’s because I’m going to repeat what I did in June and give Trump credit for convincing Americans that protectionism is a bad idea.
The opposite of what he wants, of course.
Here’s a poll that shows how different types of leftists are now in favor of trade. One interesting takeaway is that support for trade is highest among the most radical Democrats.

I’m not delusional, so I’m not going to claim that leftists now favor the principle of economic liberty.
I’m sure these poll results in large part are simply Democrats deciding that if Trump is against something, they are going to be on the other side.
Likewise, even though Republicans in recent decades have been the pro-trade party, they now have higher levels of opposition, because of misguided knee-jerk loyalty to Trump (as you might guess from this, this, this, and this, Ronald Reagan is rolling over in his grave).
But I’m encouraged that every group still has substantial majorities (“strongly support” or “somewhat support”) for the right policy.
And that’s what we see in this polling data, with all Americans supporting free-trade agreements by an overwhelming 71-16 margin.

And Americans also don’t like Trump’s trade taxes by a 50-28 margin.
These polling results are mostly encouraging, though I’m actually disappointed the numbers aren’t even better. Don’t people learn history or study economics?
