New Video Explains Why Government
Spending Hurts Economic Growth

(Washington, D.C. Monday, August 17, 2009) — The Center for Freedom and Prosperity (CF&P) has released a new video listing the key reasons why excessive government spending undermines economic performance. Entitled “Eight Reasons Why Big Government Hurts Economic Growth,” the video uses macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis to explain why the Bush-Obama policies of bigger government hinder the economy’s long-run vitality.

The video uses common-sense language and analysis to demonstrate the negative consequences of excessive government spending. “This mini-documentary gives the viewer a great foundation to understand the economic impact of federal spending,” said CF&P President Andrew Quinlan , who further noted that, “While a core level of spending on public goods is acceptable, government outlays in the United States are far above that level.”

The video, narrated by Dan Mitchell of the Cato Institute, is a continuation of CF&P’s successful economic video series. CF&P videos, on a variety of free market topics, have been viewed over 600,000 times and have earned praised from experts such as Larry Kudlow and Art Laffer.

    Executive Summary:

This Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation video analyzes how excessive government spending undermines economic performance. While acknowledging that a very modest level of government spending on things such as “public goods” can facilitate growth, the video outlines eight different ways that that big government hinders prosperity. This video focuses on theory and will be augmented by a second video looking at the empirical evidence favoring smaller government.
